GNC School District

The Greenburgh-North Castle (GNC) Union Free School District is one of 13 Special Act (special education) school districts in New York State, as determined by the New York State Department of Education.

We are committed to providing all students with a rigorous academic program aligned with New York State Standards and suited to meet students' individual needs. Our commitment to achievement is perhaps best demonstrated by the fact that GNC is the only Special Act school district in the state where students can have the opportunity to earn a New York State Regents diploma.

The philosophy of the school district is based on providing appropriate academic programming in a supportive, psycho-educational approach. The GNC education staff, along with the student and his or her counselor and therapist, work with parents in developing the most suitable academic plan for each student.

The GNC district consists of three separate school sites:

  • The Jennie Clarkson School in Valhalla, for students in our REACH program;
  • The Greenburgh Academy in Yonkers, for students living with their families;
  • The Dr. Kenneth B. Clark Academy, a true "state of the art" teaching facility on St. Christopher's Dobbs Ferry campus.

The Clark Academy and the Jennie Clarkson School operate in conjunction with St. Christopher's, with which it has a strong, long-standing partnership to ensure our youth receive seamless quality and delivery of services between educational, residential, and clinical services.

Dr. Robert Maher, who has served as the GNC School District Superintendent since 2004, was also named executive director of St. Christopher's in 2007. His active involvement in both programs, and his oversight, have yielded programs of excellence, achievement, and ever-improving quality and scope.
